Class Descriptions

week 1 – July 8

Fitted and Trimmed • with Melinda Forbes

To jump start the revamp concept, Melinda will begin by using thrift shop buys to provide creative inspiration. How many ways can one redesign a garment? A variety of methods for altering shape and design with simple embellishments and snips here and there will be demonstrated.

Be prepared to recreate that simple garment into something with unique style

PLEASE BRING
Several simple garments that fit well. Plain color cotton and cotton jersey work well, but bring whatever looks good to you
All sort of trims (lace, rick rack, buttons, beads, patches, etc)
Fabric scraps
Embroidery threads and large eye needles
Stuff to share

Weekly Show and Tell... Please wear to class, or bring in anything you have revamped at home.

week 2 – July 15

From Recycled Box to Eco-Purse • with Julie Frankel & Lesa Smith

Turn humble materials – recycled ceral box, paper & magazine collage, packing tape – into a very cool purse. This project has many possible interpretations and works well for both ‘planners’ and ‘improvisors.’ If time permits you will also get a chance to make a recycled wallet.

Save your cereal boxes
Look for belts, cords, handles from discarded handbags
magazines, old books, collage material
big button(s) or old brooch/pin
xacto knife and cutting mat

week 3 – July 22

Paper Jewelry • with Lise Batterson

Join Lise in exploring the possibilities of using recycled paper to make beads and pendants. The project will focus on creating elements that may be combined to create earrings, necklaces, or bracelets.

PLEASE BRING
old photos, stationery, greeting cards, book or magazine pages, junk mail, etc… all ready to be reborn!
Junk jewelry to take apart and combine with what is created in class.
And if you have a jewelry making kit (wire, pliers, etc) bring it along as it might come in quite handy.

Lise Batterson is a former 4/5/6 grade teacher turn stay-at-home mom. Always interested in crafts, having two kids, has headed her in the direction of child-friendly projects.

week 4 – July 29

Felted Embellishments • with Janice Strakbien

Join Janice and learn to use felted fabric made from old sweaters and knits to stitch together ornaments to perk up your wardrobe, decorate a handbag, or to clip in your hair. Because this fun fabric does not ravel, the possibilities are endless. Felted embellishments can be sophisticated or funky.

Although we will not be creating felted fabric in the classroom, directions will be posted for you to try making it at home.

Janice will provide fabric but bring your own if you try the process with success.

week 5 – August 5

A Scarf of Many Textures • with Anne Gough

Using yarn ends, ribbons, pieces of fabric, we will create a one-of-kind, highly textured strip of fabric art. You can wear it as a necklace, a scarf or a hair band.

PLEASE BRING
bring yarns & ribbons,
fabric ends/strips
and don't forget the glitz for adding fun
Bring a sewing machine if possible.

Basic Sewing Kit

Here is a supply list of items that are handy to have for each class. You will also want a small notebook to write down all those great ideas!

A cigar box or basket makes a great container

• A sharp pair of scissors

• Tiny scissors for snipping threads

• Xacto/craft knife

• Cutting mat

• A variety of threads in various colors and weights (i.e. embroidery, sewing)

• A packet of needles of various sizes

• Tape measure and ruler (12 to 18")

• Straight pins

• Pin cushion

• Thimble, if you like using a thimble

• Buttons, trims, ribbons, etc

Don’t worry if you don’t have every item, we all share – it’s the revamp way! Scissors can be multi-purpose type, they do not need to be special fabric/sewing shears.

It's All About Creativity!

The workshop series is taking shape with five different classes and instructors. Here is the line-up:

July 8: Fitted & Trimmed with Melinda Forbes
July 15: From Recycled Box to Eco-Purse with Julie Frankel & Lesa Smith
July 22: Paper Jewelry with Lise Batterson
July 29: Felted Adornments with Janice Strakbein
August 5: Scarf of Many Textures with Anne Gough

We will be posting more detailed class descriptions and supply lists shortly.

When you remake your own clothing and accessories, your style is truly your own. And there is nothing like the satisfaction of saying "I made it!" Each summer, participants take the revamp challenge and buy nothing new for 5 weeks. We visit thrift stores (and our closets) for overlooked clothes and supplies. Starting with recycled materials, local artists/teachers share their talents and DIY (do it yourself) tricks to teach a fun variety of projects. Ideas and creativity spread in this casual group setting.

Dwayne Waggoner teaches silkscreening (Revamp 2008)

The workshops are held in the ARTS Space Obispo Gallery. This July's exhibit will add inspiration. The Shirt Off Your Back is an installation by Cal Poly Professor Tera Galanti. The work in this show was made from clothing that Tera collected from Hanoi, Bangkok, Huntington Beach, and of course from thrift stores in San Luis Obispo County. The clothing becomes an element of global exchange as well as an index of its wearer's experience.
